Watching the preview clip of Back To Black, the new Amy Winehouse biopic, it is impossible to shake the image of the late singer watching it herself. Winehouse, someone unafraid to dismiss anything she saw as beneath her, would surely not accept this soft-soap depiction of her rise from jazz singer to international icon. Back To Black isn’t really for Amy Winehouse, though.

Nick Cave on making peace with the artists that have “disappointed” him

Nick Cave has recalled making peace with the artists that have “disappointed” him, explaining that he is willing to look beyond their personal decisions if the art they make is “authentic”.The Bad Seeds frontman discussed the topic in a new update on his blog, The Red Hand Files, after a fan got in touch with him to question him about his “religious turn” and asked if he ever feels like he is “letting down [his] queer and female fans”.Responding, Cave went on to share his own experience of being disappointed by artists he once admired and explained how he was able to look beyond their personal choices and enjoy their artwork for what it is.“When I think of the artists that I truly admire, those that I have stuck with over the years, at some point in their lengthy careers they have all disappointed me,” he began.“Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Nina Simone, Kanye, Van Morrison, Morrissey, Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith – these are artists that, for me, form a kind of confederacy of excellence, but at one time or another they have each alienated, confounded or displeased me. They have often not travelled in the direction I would have hoped or wished for, instead following their own confounding paths (damn them!) to their own truths.“In the course of this I have sometimes been discomforted by things they have done, disagreed with things they have said, or not liked a particular record they have made.

Listen to Wunderhorse’s bluesy new single ‘Midas’

Wunderhorse have shared their bluesy new single ‘Midas’ – check it out below. The track opens with a crisp guitar riff and sees frontman Jacob Slater sing/speak: “The voice inside the suit came crawling through the telephone / Somewhere between the cheeseboard and a nursery rhyme / I heard the rattlesnake shaking in his invitation / And the whites of his knuckles on the other end of the line”, his voice reminiscent of Bob Dylan.Speaking about the creation of the song in a press release, Slater said: “The song was written in a bathtub in Paris, and forgotten about until it resurfaced in Minnesota. Midas is the guy who makes you feel like a pencil stub, all used up and nothing to show for it, but it’s always just business as far as he’s concerned.”Directed, shot and edited by Polocho, the accompanying music video sees the band performing the song in a dark room while a man in a business suit is crafting a baby doll in a scary office looking room. The track marks the band’s first release following their 2022 debut album ‘Cub‘.

No, you’re not just getting old — song lyrics really are getting worse, according to new research

The Weeknd up for a Nobel Prize for literature.A new study showing a steep decline in songwriting skills over the last 40 years used folk crooner Bob Dylan’s award from the sainted Swedish institution of an example of how much music has changed. To draw their conclusions, a team of researchers from Europe pored over the words to roughly 12,000 songs in English across a variety of genres from rap to rock to R&B, written between 1980 and 2020, The Guardian reported.Their findings were exactly as anyone over the age of 40 might have suspected — lyrics have become simpler, more repetitive, angrier and more self-obsessed.“What we have also been witnessing in the last 40 years is a drastic change in the music landscape — from how music is sold to how music is produced,” said senior study author Eva Zangerle, recommendations systems expert at the University of Innsbruck. The study declined to name and shame any newer artists, but instead spoke of how lyrics can be a “mirror of society,” reflecting a culture’s shifting values and preoccupations. The study, published in Scientific Reports, concentrated on emotions expressed, repetitiveness and word choice, particularly to see how often difficult or unusual words were used.

Sharon Stone criticises Johnny Depp’s lucrative art sales

Sharon Stone has made a critical comment about Johnny Depp’s artwork in a recent interview. The Basic Instinct star, who switched her focus from acting to art during the COVID lockdown, has just opened her own exhibition in Berlin, and is due to open another in San Francisco in April. In explaining her road to success to The Guardian, she made comments referring to an art collection created by Depp, which sold for more than $3.6million within hours. The collection, titled Friends And Heroes, featured portraits of individuals who inspired the actor: Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Al Pacino and Elizabeth Taylor.According to Business Insider, Depp sold all 780 pieces within hours of his announcement that the art would be on sale at Castle Fine Art’s 37 gallery in Birmingham, England.Stone however, didn’t seem to be quite so enamoured with the portraits, saying: “Johnny Depp is printing pictures of people, putting some paint over it and signing it, and making a fortune.”Depp followed up the original collection with some more prints in 2023, which featured other famous faces including Bob Marley, Heath Ledger and River Phoenix.Seemingly referring to Depp’s recent sale of his self-portrait, in which he donated $200 from every sale to Mental Health America, Stone shared that she had received similar requests from galleries.“I had galleries approach me and say, ‘Could you please make prints of your face?’ I think it’s my duty not to do that,” she said.
