Oscar Hopefuls From Cate Blanchett To Steven Spielberg Hit Palm Springs As Awards Season Cranks Up

In Palm Springs they do it all a little differently. At least that is the impression you might have gotten if you attended last night’s 34th Annual International Film Awards gala which kicked off the Desert Film Festival, back in action for the first time since January of 2020, just weeks before Covid would shut everything down. However the bejeweled and upper crust of Palm Springs society were gathered again at the massive Palm Springs Convention Center to celebrate a select group of stars who not so coincidentally all happen to be among the most buzzed of Oscar contenders. With a red carpet that doesn’t stop at the front doors, but actually continues all the way through the huge lobby and then into the actual ballroom itself, this event was, and by the looks of it, a must stop on the way to the Dolby in March.

The Pinstripe Pirate: How ‘Living’ Star Bill Nighy Overcame His Karaoke Nightmare And Became An International Treasure

After some 50 years in the business, Bill Nighy is used to people getting his surname wrong. It actually rhymes with ‘sigh’: the ‘y’ is silent. “My dad was very particular about it,” he says, “and for a while, I used to correct people on his behalf, because he couldn’t bear it when people said ‘Nigh-y’. It really got to him. But I’m very, very accustomed to it. The first time I was ever in a show that was reviewed in a paper, I was Bill Nigby. I’ve been Bill Nighty — that’s a regular one — and if there’s one more than any other, it’s Nighly. It’s funny, when people get things wrong, they don’t get them wrong by simplifying them, they get them wrong by making them more complicated. So, they lengthen my name. It’s always slightly longer than it should be.”

Women Talking has had Oscar pundits talking since its festival premieres in Telluride and Toronto, with buzz surrounding actors Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw and Polley herself as writer-director, adapting Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel about a group of women who meet to discuss abuse in a small religious colony.Laura Poitras is a past Oscar winner, for her 2014 documentary about whistleblower Edward Snowden, and is heavily favored to enter the doc race again for this year’s All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, centered on photographer Nan Goldin’s attempt to hold Purdue Pharma responsible for the massive rise in opioid deaths (similarly explored in the Hulu series Dopesick last year).Despite plaudits and awards aplenty for his novels and stories, Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro has only written a handful of film scripts, and his latest for the Bill Nighy-starring Living might be his ticket to Hollywood’s big night.

Bill Nighy on the Oscar Buzz Surrounding ‘Living’: ‘I Don’t Get Out Much’

Brent Lang Executive Editor For Bill Nighy, the road to a character’s heart runs through his tailor. “The clothes govern how you move, how you think and how you feel,” he says. In the case of “Living,” the story of Mr. Williams, a bureaucrat in 1953 London grappling with a fatal illness, the meant donning a bespoke pin-striped suit. But he struggled with the wide shoulders that were the fashion of that era. “I didn’t think I had the frame to pull it off,” Nighy says. And there was one feature that was particularly burdensome. “I had to wear a bowler hat, and they are absolutely bizarre,” muses Nighy. “How they caught on, I’ll never know. If a brick fell on your head from a very great height, you’d be fine. If you fell off a horse or a motorbike, you’d emerge unscathed. You could go to war with that hat on and be well protected.”
