Lurid mysteries abound in Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio’s latest feature, “The Wonder.” Starring “Don’t Worry Darling” and “Little Women” Oscar nominee Florence Pugh as an nurse tasked with caring for an ailing 11-year-old girl who’s inexplicably not eaten in four months, the first trailer showcases an atmospheric, 19th century tale with eerie twists and turns as Pugh nurse, the girl’s family and the townspeople around them fights to determine the young girl’s secret. You might assume that after “Dead Ringers,” even Oscar winner Rachel Weisz would reconsider tackling the responsibility of portraying two leading roles in a six-hour limited series again. But, you’d be wrong.

In a TV and movie landscape that can often feel bogged down by reboots and a dependency on IP, Dead Ringers pulls off a minor miracle. The Amazon Prime Video series is based on the 1988 David Cronenberg movie of the same name but doesn’t exist to remind viewers of the past, instead it using the story as a vessel into which writer Alice Birch has poured big ideas about the state of the American healthcare system — specifically how it treats mothers. Rachel Weisz plays sisters Beverly and Elliot Mantle, a pair of codependent gynecologists.

Interpreting known characters across race and gender lines is promising in theory, but all too often executed without much intention — a hasty, lazy substitute for a fresh take on the source material. “Dead Ringers,” the new limited series from Amazon Prime Video, is not such a case. Riffing on the David Cronenberg film of the same name, the show swaps in Rachel Weisz for Jeremy Irons as a pair of codependent gynecologists. Unlike so many of its peers, “Dead Ringers” reaps ample rewards from its central switch, preserving Cronenberg’s signature strangeness while taking the premise to new, surprising heights.
