Campbell Hatton has had to learn to deal with the level of pressure that comes with his family name.
The 23-year-old has certainly been placed under more scrutiny than most 14-0 boxers at the start of their career. There was an inevitable level of expectation when Campbell began to follow in the footsteps of his father, Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton. Being the son of a beloved world champion would have been enough to dissuade many young prospects from pursuing a career in the ring.
However, Campbell Hatton believes he is finally being judged on his own merits, not his father’s legacy. ‘The Hurricane’ has been busy making up for his lack of amateur experience and registered five wins in 2023. This weekend, Hatton faces a step-up in class against James Flint for the super lightweight Central Area title and will be firmly focused on the opponent in front of him after learning to block out the noise around his burgeoning career.

“I struggled with it earlier. We knew there was going to be pressure and it was going to be a big deal [starting as a pro] but I don’t think we anticipated how big it was going to be,” Hatton told MEN Sport. “I think as a team we’ve all learned. It was affecting my early performances and it was a little bit too much, too soon.
“We went away to a few quieter shows and just changed my mindset. I made sure I prepared well, to the point that I knew I couldn’t do any more and then what will be, will be. By doing that, I’m a completely different fighter now and you can see it.
