Considered one of the most popular nursery rhymes of all time, Humpty Dumpty has long been portrayed as an innocent egg, and there are many pictures of his shell - dating all the way back to his appearance in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland sequel.
However, people have been horrified to learn that the egg character isn't actually an egg - he has just been depicted as one for too long. The lyrics to the nursery rhyme never actually indicate that he is an egg - and don't mention the word egg at all.

So, why have we associated Humpty Dumpty with being an egg? That was a question doing the rounds on social media earlier this year.
One wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): "Who decided Humpty Dumpty was an egg? Its not in the lyrics, and deciding he's a giant egg is quite a random leap for someone to make, and everyone else being like, 'yeah, a giant egg on a wall. Of course."
