He was the DJ that soundtracked the lives of millions of loyal listeners over the past five decades. The death of BBC Radio 2 star Steve Wright at the age of 69 has shocked and saddened all those who ever tuned into one of his hugely popular national radio shows.
His voice, and his good humour, simply meant so much to so many. For those who grew up in the 1980s and 90s he became essential listening on Radio 1 with the slot that would go on to define his career - Steve Wright in The Afternoon.
When the show moved to Radio 2 he would go on to win an even bigger army of fans dominating a slot that would run for 23 years through to 2022. To millions of listeners, he simply was THE sound of the afternoon.

His shows would become known for their cast of spoof guests and zany comedy skits, running from 1981 through to 1993 on Radio 1 in the golden era of the national station. He would go on to a short-lived stint on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in 1994, before moving to Radio 2 in 1996.
His Radio 2 career would begin with new weekend shows including his Sunday Love Songs - which would go on to endure on the station. But fans didn't have long to wait before he returned to his trademark slot, with Steve Wright in the Afternoon returning for his new BBC Radio 2 audience from 1999.
Famous slots on the show included Steve Wright's True Stories - with his retelling of listeners' bizarre and often hilarious real-life misadventures. In more recent years popular slots included "Serious Jockin'" with listeners ringing in with their mundane activities for a shout-out and Factoids with a round-up of unusual stats every day.
His final afternoon show aired in September 2022,
