The parents of a young mum who was murdered by her boyfriend are supporting a new Sunday Mail campaign to stop domestic abusers being granted bail to their partner’s home.
Fiona and Ian Inglis are behind our calls to close a loophole that could have saved the life of their daughter Claire Inglis, 28, who was killed by thug Christopher McGowan. He had 39 previous convictions – including one for domestic aggravated assault – but was still released on bail to the home she shared with her son. Six weeks later he killed her.
Current legislation does not allow sheriffs and judges to make sure offenders with a history of domestic abuse convictions are either remanded in custody or bailed to an address the court can guarantee places no woman at risk.
Fiona, 62, said: “McGowan had previous convictions for violence and even for domestic abuse and I can categorically say Claire never knew about these as there is no way she would have put her son in danger. We completely back the Sunday Mail’s campaign because if he hadn’t been allowed to go to Claire’s home, she would still be alive today.”
Our campaign calls on:
● The Scottish Government to change the law to ensure women are kept safe from dangerous domestic abusers on bail.
● Sheriffs to have the power to prohibit someone who has been accused or convicted of domestic abuse being granted bail to an address where a woman or children live.
● New partners of those with a record of domestic abuse convictions to be informed by the authorities.
In October, McGowan, 28, was jailed for a minimum of 23 years after being found guilty of the “beyond sadistic” murder of Claire. She suffered 76 injuries at his hands during the assault on November 28, 2021, leaving her with bleeding inside her skull
