Thousands of people are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every year in the UK but around 90 percent of women are unaware of the main symptoms, meaning it is often diagnosed at a later stage. Ovarian cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the ovary begin to grow and divide in an uncontrolled way, eventually forming into a tumour.
If the disease is left untreated, the cancer cells gradually grow into surrounding tissues, and may spread to other areas of the body.This is known as metastatic ovarian cancer. Getting diagnosed at an early stage means that treatment is more likely to be successful.
Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer The Ovarian Cancer Action charity has highlighted the tell-tale signs to look out for, especially in those aged 50 and above.The most common symptoms are as follows: Persistent stomach pain Persistent bloating Difficulty eating and feeling full more quickly Needing to wee more frequently Additional red flag symptoms include irritable bowel syndrome, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome, a change in bowel habits, fatigue and back pain. It is important to note that these symptoms are not always due to ovarian cancer.
