India has selected the survival thriller 2018 from filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars.
The film was picked by a selection committee formed by the Film Federation of India and chaired by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli. Starring Tovino Thomas, Kunchacko Boban, and Asif Ali, the pic is a disaster film set during the 2018 Kerala Floods, where people from all walks of life faced catastrophic consequences and put in collective efforts to survive the calamity. Joseph co-wrote the pic with Akhil P. Dharmajan. Producers are Anto Joseph, C.K. Padma Kumar, and Venu Kunnappilly.
According to local press, 22 films were up for the Oscars spot. Some of the titles were The Kerala Story, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway, Balagam, Vaalvi, Baaplyok, and August 16, 1947.
Last year, Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show, produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nalin, Dheer Momaya, and Mark Duale, was selected as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Oscar race. The Gujarati-language Last Film Show (Chhello Show) is a semi-autobiographical drama that pays homage to the cinema of the past — a reminder of childhood innocence and the universal magic of the movies. The pic didn’t make the final cut. However, S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR won the Oscar for original song for Naatu Naatu and Kartiki Gonsalves, and Guneet Monga’s The Elephant Whisperers won the Oscar for short doc.
