“Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth. ” That’s what best actor winner Will Smith shouted - twice - after hitting Chris Rock in the face for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. Going out un-bleeped in the UK, it was a bizarre, shocking moment of violence that cast a weird pall over the rest of the awards, not least Smith’s own win for King Richard.

However, while the critically acclaimed film — which memorably unleashed the power of the dong with on-screen full-frontal male nudity — did score a slew of awards before the Oscars, it was not nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for best ensemble, which is typically a reliable predictor of a Best Picture win.“Dog” did win best picture in the drama category at the controversy-ridden Golden Globes, which did not air after embarrassing public backlash, alongside “West Side Story,” which was top dog in the musical category. While given seven nods, Steven Spielberg’s updated “West Side Story” hardly shared the same success as the 1961 original, which took home more Oscars than any other musical has.
Plot twist. It’s safe to say Chris Rock’s brief time on stage at the 2022 Oscars stole the show after Will Smith got visibly angry over his Jada Pinkett Smith joke.
