New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggest that around one million adults in England are living with type 2 diabetes without knowing it.
The condition can cause blood sugar levels to become too high, which can lead to serious health problems if not treated. The ONS used data from the Health Survey for England between 2013 and 2019 to estimate that 7% of people over the age of 16 show signs of type 2 diabetes.
However, about one million of these people, or three in ten, have not been diagnosed. Previously, Diabetes UK estimated this figure to be 850,000 based on data from Public Health England in 2016.

The ONS also found that 50% of people aged 16 to 44 were undiagnosed compared to 27% of those aged 75 and over. People with good general health and slim women with smaller waists who were not taking anti-depressants were also more likely to be undiagnosed.
In 2023, Diabetes UK estimated that 4.3 million people in the UK had a diagnosis of diabetes. Symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, being tired, and needing to urinate more often, but many people do not have any symptoms.

The ONS has shared data showing about 5.1 million adults in England have pre-diabetes, which means their blood sugar levels are higher than usual but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes.
It was typically adults that were overweight or older who were most likely to get this illness.
Even so, the ONS highlighted that pre-diabetes was
