One Foot In The Grave star Doreen Mantle dies aged 97

Actress Doreen Mantle has died “peacefully at home” aged 97, her agent has said. Best known for her performance as Jean Warboys in the BBC comedy series One Foot In The Grave, the much loved star also had appearances in Doctors and Coronation Street. In a statement, her agent said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved client and much-loved stage, screen, and radio actress Doreen Mantle, aged 97.
“She died peacefully at home. She is survived by her two sons, four grandchildren and one brother.” Throughout her career, Doreen starred in a number of popular shows and films, including My Family, Doctors, Dirk Gently, Jam And Jerusalem, Doc Martin, Jonathan Creek and Yentl. The actress was also no stranger to a theatre stage either, as she also trod the boards in Death Of A Salesman for the National Theatre, for which she won an Olivier Award in 1979 for actress of the year in a supporting role.
She also featured in her one woman show My Truth and Reconciliation, and appeared in 84 Charing Cross Road at The Ambassadors Theatre and classic comedy Billy Liar at the Duke of York’s Theatre. Since the sad announcement of her death, fans have been paying tribute to the acting legend who brought so much joy on stage and screen throughout her life. "Sad to hear the death of Doreen Mantle here she is in #Corrie as Joy Fishwick one of John Stape’s victims playing the role from 2010-2011 for 10 appearances," wrote one fan as they reflected on her soap role.
"Gutted to hear about the death of Doreen Mantle, I loved her in One Foot in the Grave," added another. Meanwhile a third fan wrote: "#doreenmantle what a life. A fantastic actress you just knew it would be a good watch if she was in it.
