On the red carpet at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards in Salford

The country's top sports stars lined the red carpet in Salford tonight (December 19) as they arrived for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards. The 70th edition of the annual awards show is taking place at MediaCityUK with the winner to be crowned by 9pm.
Among the contenders for the main prize are Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps, cricketer Stuart Broad and athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, jockey Frankie Dettori and golfer Rory McIlroy are also among the finalists.
Other awards to be handed out at the ceremony include the World Sport Star, Team and Young Sports Personality of the Year. Liverpool and Scotland legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has already been announced as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Fifteen regional finalists have also been selected for the BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero of the Year award - which celebrates volunteers in sport - including Khadija Patel who is the founder of the volunteer-led female-only KRIMMZ Girls Youth club in Bolton.
Voting will open for the main award during the show which started at 7pm. The winner of the main award will be announced by 9pm.
Sports stars started arriving on the red carpet at Dock 10 in Salford Quays from 4.30pm to speak to the media and pose for photos. The red carpet was cleared after a couple of hours as guests took their places for the main event which is being televised live on BBC One.
