Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone, Kevin Connolly to Star in Dark Comedy ‘Krazy House’

Elsa Keslassy International Correspondent Charades has boarded “Northern Comfort,” an Icelandic black comedy by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson (“Under the Tree”) which is world premiering at SXSW. The well-established sales company (“Sanctuary,” “Disco Boy”) has unveiled an exclusive clip for the film ahead of its world premiere in the Narrative Spotlight section. “Northern Comfort” follows a bunch of phobic flyers, including a middle-aged property developer, a couple of twenty-something influencers and a former SAS-serviceman turned crime-novelist in his 60’s. Seeking to overcome their fear of flying, they embark on a high-end therapeutic course on a flight whose final destination is Iceland. But the experience ends up being a complete nightmare. When the group finally steps onto solid ground, their anxiety levels are off the charts and the idea of taking a flight back home to London becomes an unbearable prospect. As their intended flight is repeatedly delayed, they end up in a remote luxury ‘wellness’ hotel somewhere in the bleak, wild moonscape of the Reykjanes peninsula, finally forced to deal with one another.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Jan Naszewski’s Warsaw-based sales outlet New Europe Film Sales has sold North American distribution rights for its Berlinale-selected drama “Delegation” to Greenwich Entertainment. “Delegation” is a story of three Israeli high school friends who take part in a class trip visiting Holocaust sites in Poland – their last time together before going to the army. During the trip, shy boy Frisch, aspiring artist Nitzan and class heartthrob Ido deal with issues of love, friendship and politics against the backdrop of concentration camps and memorial sites. The journey will change them forever. The deal for the film, which had its premiere in the Generation 14Plus competition, was negotiated by Naszewski and Greenwich co-president Edward Arentz.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Laurie Metcalf and Tatiana Maslany will share the stage in the upcoming Broadway play “Grey House.” Joe Mantello, the Tony-winning director of “Wicked,” “Take Me Out” and “Assassins,” is directing the show, described as the “first-of-its-kind Broadway experience.” It’s one of the few thrillers on the Great White Way. Levi Holloway wrote “Grey House,” which takes place after a couple crashes their car in the mountains and seek shelter in an isolated cabin. The somewhat unusual inhabitants are eager to make their guests feel right at home. But as the blizzard outside rages on and one night turns into several, the couple becomes less and less sure of what’s true—about their hosts, themselves, and why that sound in the walls keeps getting louder. 

Janette Manrara has announced she is expecting her first baby with husband Aljaz Skorjanec after the couple struggled to get pregnant. The married couple, who have both quit Strictly Come Dancing's main BBC show, will soon be expecting their new arrival. Janette, 39, revealed the couple had planned to undergo IVF treatment as they opened up about their bundle of joy in a new interview, but conceived naturally.

Production on the pic has just been completed in Amsterdam. The cast is rounded out by Gaite Jansen, Walt Klink, Jan Bijvoet, Chris Peters, and Matti Stooker. Maarten Swart will produce the film for Kaap Holland Film, in a co-production with Haars and van der Kuil. Kaap Holland Film’s Jorn Baars and XYZ’s Todd Brown are executive producers. Splendid Films is handling distribution in the Benelux. XYZ has North American sales rights.

Jessica Kiang Syrupy red blood oozing between champing white teeth: If there’s a signature image in Jennifer Reeder’s “Perpetrator,” that might just be it. It’s a striking horror motif but, jumbled in amongst so many other striking horror motifs — nose splints and tattered school uniforms, bloodied fishnet stockings and features-blurring plastic facemasks — by the third or fourth repetition, it loses its visceral punch. As with so much else in Reeder’s overstuffed but underpowered third feature, the oral hemorrhaging is a fetishized detail that seems to have come unstuck from what it might mean. Is it vampirism? Lycanthropy? Psychokinesis? Acute gingivitis? Who’s to say, and, more to the point, why to care?

Bayona’s The Impossible.” Filmax will unveil a trailer to clients at this week’s Berlin European Film Market, before the film’s release in Spain on March 10.  The second feature from Lucia Alemany (“Innocence”), ”Co-Husbands” toplines “House of Flowers” star Paco León. In a gender flip set-up, it turns on Emilio and Tono who both receive phone calls that their wives are in comas after a ski-resort avalanche. At the hospital admissions desk, they make a startling discovery: their wives are, in fact, the same person … Laura. Forced to wait together until Laura regains consciousness, Emilio and Toni engage in a battle to prove who is her one and only true husband.

Leo Barraclough International Features Editor Ted Field’s Radar Pictures, best known for the “Jumanji” and “The Chronicles of Riddick” franchises, has teamed with James Leon’s 8th Gear Entertainment to produce action-thriller “Breakneck,” centering on a female driver who moves between the worlds of getaway driving and Formula E racing. The project is eyed as a franchise-starter in the vein of “Fast & Furious,” and is being made in partnership with FIA ABB Formula E, electric racing’s championship organizer. Jim Byrkit (“Coherence”) will direct from a script by Nick Kocher (“Saturday Night Live”). “Breakneck” chronicles the story of a racer, who — despite growing up as a poor orphan — climbs the Formula E ranks only to have her first ePrix race end terribly, and in her removal from the sport. To make ends meet, she becomes a getaway driver for a gang in Miami, still reminiscing of her days as a Formula E driver.
