The New York judge who will sentence Donald Trump next month has lifted parts of his gag order on the former president.
Judge Juan Merchan issued an order today that allows Trump to make statements about witnesses and jurors in the case, but leaves in place restrictions on what he can say about prosecutors, court staff and their families. Merchan indicated that would be in place until Trump is sentenced, scheduled for July 11.
In May, a jury convicted Trump of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, stemming from hush money payments paid to former porn star Stormy Daniels. Trump has bashed the judge and District Attorney Alvin Bragg as biased against him, and he plans to appeal the conviction.
Read the revised gag order.
Merchan did note that he was keeping restrictions on the release of jury information in place. The jurors have remained publicly anonymous throughout the process.
Trump was fined $10,000 during the trial for violating the judge’s gag order, as Merchan threatened him with jail time for continuing violations.
