New Winter Fuel Payment video aims to help more people understand who qualifies for up to £600

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released a short video answering key questions a bout Winter Fuel Payments following an increase in people searching for information about the one-off annual heating bill support which is paid directly into bank accounts over November and December.
DWP explained: “We recognise that there is concern about rising energy costs, as a result, we have experienced more people searching for information about Winter Fuel Payments and/or contacting DWP to ask about it. Most of those eligible do not have to claim their Winter Fuel Payment, as it is awarded automatically.”
The video is available on the DWP’s official YouTube channel and covers eligibility, who will not qualify, who may need to apply and when it will be paid. It also reminds people that a letter will be issued to all eligible recipients advising them of the amount they will receive.
To be eligible for this year's Winter Fuel Payment, you must have been born on or before September 25, 1956 and lived in the UK for at least one day during the week of 19 to 25 September 2022 - this is called the ‘qualifying week’.
If you did not meet either of these qualifying criteria, or if you live abroad, you may need to make a claim. If you’ve had a Winter Fuel Payment before, you do not need to claim again unless you’ve deferred your State Pension or moved abroad - find out more here.
DWP guidance on GOV.UK states that most payments are made automatically in November or December, but the money should be paid by January 13, 2023 at the latest. The video explains that you should not contact the DWP before January 13 as they will not be able to deal with the query before then.
