A new online petition is calling on the UK Government to “permanently scrap green levies on all energy bills” which could see the average household pay an extra £170 from this month, despite the implementation of Ofgem's lower price cap on July 1. Petition creator Sophie Corcoran argues that the levies are “unnecessary” and “expensive” during the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The ‘Permanently scrap green levies on energy bills’ is hosted on the official petitions parliament website where it has already received nearly 3,000 signatures of support. At 10,000 signatures the UK Government is obliged to give a response to the proposals.
Ms Corcoran’s proposal states: “We call on the [UK] Government to permanently scrap green levies on all energy bills. This is because these levies are set to be reintroduced, adding around £170 to the average annual energy bill.
"We believe these levies are unnecessary - they are making something that is a necessity to all UK households more expensive, whilst households battle through the cost of living crisis.
“People have seen dramatic rises in their energy bills and the Government should be doing all it can to help households out, which we believe should include permanently scraping these levies, which make energy more expensive for households.”
The petition is open until December 29, 2023 and can be viewed online here.

However, energy prices have now fallen below the level set by the £2,500 price guarantee, and as a result households without a prepayment
