‘Anatomy Of A Scandal’ Review: A Shallow, Ludicrous, Soap Opera From David E. Kelley & Netflix

Shallow soap opera dialogue and an absolutely ludicrous plot twist about 2/3rds of the way through a six-episode season hold the admittedly talented ensemble of Netflix’s “Anatomy of a Scandal” back from creating anything that resembles realistic characters or genuine drama. And yet, this adaptation of the book by Sarah Vaughan can’t even commit to the kind of broad, goofy escapism that resulted in recent hits for the streamer like “Clickbait” or “Pieces of Her.” It’s caught in some numbingly dull valley between thinking it’s a high-brow commentary on privileged toxic masculinity and just leaning into the fact that it doesn’t give a damn about any of its characters and doesn’t really have anything to say that’s deeper than a puddle.

Netflix Pumps Brakes on Will Smith Action Film ‘Fast and Loose’

Carson Burton Netflix has slowed development on its upcoming action-thriller “Fast and Loose,” which Will Smith has been attached to star in. The project has been moved to the streamer’s back burner in the days following the 2022 Oscars ceremony, during which Smith walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about the appearance of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. In the week before the Oscars ceremony, director David Leitch reportedly also pulled away from the project, electing to move to the Ryan Gosling vehicle “Fall Guy” for Universal. It remains uncertain whether Netflix will return to developing “Fast and Loose” and, if so, whether the streamer would seek a new star for the project.

‘The Bubble’: Why Judd Apatow Produced His Netflix Movie ‘Like It Was a 2-Hour ‘Simpsons’ Episode’

“The Bubble” tells the story of a cast and crew assembling to shoot a franchise blockbuster sequel in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic (inspired by the difficult productions of “Jurassic World: Dominion” and others). Trapped in a hotel for isolation purposes, the cast and crew slowly go mad, and Apatow’s film tackles many of the same issues everyone else experienced during the pandemic – except on a heightened scale.Like with his previous films including “Knocked Up” and “Trainwreck,” Apatow assembled a knockout cast of comedic talent that includes Karen Gillan, Keegan-Michael Key, David Duchovny, Fred Armisen and Leslie Mann.

‘2022 Oscar-Nominated Short Films: Documentary’ Review: Netflix Dominates Mid-Length Doc Category

Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticPeople make documentaries about all kinds of things: some slight and silly, others educational or emotional. But if you want to be nominated for an Oscar in the doc short category, it’s best to zero in on an issue the Academy can get behind, like homelessness, bullying and confronting prejudice.

‘2022 Oscar-Nominated Short Films: Animation’ Review: It’s Aardman’s Race to Lose

Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticChances are, you landed on this review because you’re trying to game your Oscar pool, looking for a clue as to what will win the always-underseen shorts categories — in a year when they were unceremoniously booted from the telecast, no less. Well, if it’s predictions you’re looking for, there’s little contest among this year’s cartoon contenders: Academy favorite Aardman Animations has delivered a delightful frontrunner in “Robin Robin.” But don’t stop reading there! In an unusually adult-leaning year, the traditionally kid-friendly category is well worth watching in its entirety, whether in theaters or on demand, thanks to stalwart distributor ShortsTV.The program opens with “Robin Robin,” which seems poised to earn Aardman its fifth Oscar (the other four were all won by Nick Park, creator of the Wallace and Gromit characters).

‘2022 Oscar-Nominated Short Films: Live Action’ Review: This Wasn’t the Year to Cut the Category

Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticWhat is going on over at the Academy? For years, I have questioned whether it made sense for the organization to continue awarding short films, seeing as how they are no longer a routine part of the moviegoing experience (the category dates back to a time when newsreels and short subjects regularly preceded the main attraction). Except in rare cases, when an animation studio attaches one to its latest feature-length cartoon, it’s been decades since shorts got serious theatrical play. These days, they’re relegated to film festivals and small-screen formats — so why include them in the telecast, I wondered.I was wrong.
