NBC Considers Dropping 10 PM Primetime Hour, Handing It Back to Local Affiliates

The best of the 2021-2022 TV season has been revealed, first during the 74th Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which were handed on Sept. 3 and 4, before being followed by the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by Kenan Thompson on Sept. 12.

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are set to kick off Monday beginning at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET live on NBC and on the Peacock streaming service for the first time. The three-hour ceremony will take place at the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles, and SNL veteran Kenan Thompson will host.

The eight-episode series follows armchair detective Bell Prescott (Luke Kirby) and traffic cop Cammie Lorde (Tiana Okoye) as they investigate a murder in their small Florida town. United Scenic Artists, IATSE Local 829, has released its first-ever demographic survey of its more than 5,000 members nationwide. According to the local, the survey revealed a “strikingly” small “inclusion of members who identify as part of the Black Community (1.9%), Asian Community (2.7%), Latin/X Community (3.6%), Indigenous Community (0.4%), and the Middle Eastern/North African Community (0.6%).”

Instead, this is just the most recent in ongoing explorations and it could lead to no changes at all. Additionally, sources say NBCU is not mulling this as a cost-cutting move that would lead to less programming, but one that might be made to best utilize the broadcast brand and relationship with affiliates vs. its streaming and cable options.
