Nathan Aké’s summer plans could present Manchester City and Pep Guardiola with a major issue in the transfer window if he decides to move on in search of regular first-team football.
The Dutchman signed for the Blues in the summer of 2020 and was a part of a star-studded squad that won the Premier League title, a fourth-consecutive Carabao Cup and reached a club-first Champions League final last season.
Despite not being a regular fixture in the side, Aké has produced some big moments in his 20 months at the club – namely a dramatic clearance off the line against Arsenal on New Years’ Day.

The 27-year-old has proven himself as a top-level central defender and there were no complaints from Blues fans when he was brought into the club to replace Eric Garcia – who joined FC Barcelona in 2020.
However, in nearly two full seasons, Aké has made only 32 appearances in all competitions and has failed to establish himself as a regular in the team. In fact, the only time he did get a run of games was at left-back in the absence of Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Guardiola’s preferred pairing at the heart of defence this season has been Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte, with John Stones the able deputy – meaning Aké has become a bit of a castaway.
At his age, it would not be unusual for the centre-back to be assessing his options this summer, with a long list of clubs surely interested in securing his signature.
An excellent on-the-ground tackler with a killer aerial presence, Aké’s talent could definitely be of use at a host of top European clubs. Whether he does move on or not though, is ultimately down to him.
He signed a five-year contract upon his
