NAACP Image Awards: 'Black-ish,' 'Jingle Jangle,' 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' Top Nominations

Following the critical acclaim of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, George C. Wolfe and Netflix are reteaming as Wolfe has come on to direct Rustin for Netflix and President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.

Academy Award winner Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”) will also produce with Dustin Lance Black.Wolfe is the director of Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which stars Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman and was nominated for two Golden Globes.

George C. Wolfe has been celebrated for his groundbreaking work on stage as a playwright and director for decades.

It is truly unfortunate that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has disqualified Branford Marsalis’ riveting original score for the Netflix feature adaptation of the August Wilson play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.  AMPAS’ current rule is that a movie’s music needs to be comprised of 60% of original score, and apparently this feature love letter to 1920s jazz and blues falls under that quota.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” will be honoured as one of AFI’s Top 10 Films of the Year, so director George C. Wolfe is now taking ET Canada behind the scenes of the film’s opening sequence, revealing the importance of every little sound.

Unlike many of the other Oscar categories that shortlist their potential nominees at 15 contenders, the Makeup and Hairstyling branch only selects 10 films. Somewhat odd considering almost every narrative feature features a working member of their branch, but so be it.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Minari topped the nominations for the 2021 SAG Awards with three nods each. While Trial of the Chicago 7 and Da 5 Bloods, in a comeback after being surprisingly shut out by the Golden Globes, earned three nods a piece from SAG-AFTRA as well, one of those nominations was in the stunt performers category.

Chadwick Boseman has earned a posthumous Golden Globes nomination for his last ever film performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The actor, who died of cancer aged 43 last year, received a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama on Wednesday (3 February).

Clayton Davis D-Nice, Viola Davis, Regina King, Trevor Noah and Tyler Perry are nominated for entertainer of the year at the 2021 NAACP Image Awards.The nominations were virtually announced Tuesday on the NAACP Image Awards’ Instagram by Anika Noni-Rose (“Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey”), Chloe Bailey (“Grown-ish”), Erika Alexander (“John Lewis: Good Trouble”), Nicco Annan (“P-Valley”), and TC Carson (“Living Single”).This is King’s third consecutive nomination for the top award and Perry’s
