last night’s Academy Awards (April 25).The actor, who won the gong for his depiction of a man with Alzheimer’s in The Father, gave a short speech in a video message sent from Wales. He expressed his shock at winning and honoured the Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star, who died of cancer last year.

Silence of the Lambs star, who normally resides in Malibu, returned to Wales before the Bafta awards ceremony earlier this month and won the best actor award at that ceremony too. Since then he has been posting his travels around his homeland, and how much he has been loving his time.

Unlike the rest of the world tuning in to watch Hollywood's biggest night, Anthony Hopkins was sound "asleep" and had no idea when Joaquin Phoenix announced that he had won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for The Father at Oscars 2021.

was in South Wales instead of the awards show, held in Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, California, when the trophy was presented by last year's winner Joaquin Phoenix.  Just before his win he tweeted a video of himself in a South Wales graveyard visiting his baker father's tombstone.
