Congressman Joaquin Castro and Hispanic Caucus Members Call on Public to Nominate Latino Films for National Film Registry

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Congressman Joaquin Castro and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have launched a nationwide call for Latino films to nominate for the National Film Registry. The U.S.’s preeminent archive of films with cultural, historic or aesthetic significance is essential in preserving cinema. Every year, the Librarian of Congress adds 25 new movies to the registry after reviewing titles nominated by the public and conferring with National Film Preservation Board members and Library film curators. As of 2023, there are 24 Latino films on the National Film Registry, less than three percent of the 850 movies in the registry. “Since the earliest days of cinema, Latino actors, writers, directors, and creatives have made extraordinary contributions to American filmmaking,” said Congressman Castro. “As the Library of Congress works to preserve the films that shaped American culture, public nominations will put a spotlight on the Latino-driven films that have sold out theaters and defined generations. As we launch this year’s push for inclusion, I look forward to hearing from folks across America about the Latino films that have made an enduring impact on their lives.”

Emmys Diversity Report: Pedro Pascal Makes Latino History, Black Women Set Acting Record

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor This year’s Emmy nominees will highlight a more diverse crop of actors, with Latino performers having a particularly strong showing. Of course, much of that is thanks to Pedro Pascal, who has become the most nominated Latino in a single year with three noms. He’s recognized for his work in “The Last of Us” as lead drama actor, “Saturday Night Live” as guest comedy actor and “Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World” as outstanding narrator. Pascal’s nomination for HBO’s dystopian video game adaptation makes him only the second Latino ever recognized in the drama category after Jimmy Smits’ four consecutive noms for “NYPD Blue” from 1996-1999. But there were some notable Latino stars who didn’t hear their names read — namely, Diego Luna, who was snubbed for Disney’s “Andor” despite its best drama series nomination.

‘Die Hard’ crew feared Bruce Willis was dead after filming his first big scene

“The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage” by Nick de Semlyen (Crown).“In the context of these ’roid-rage, superhuman heroes we had at the time, this character seemed like a pu–y.”The character in question, of course, was John McClane, who transformed Bruce Willis from a wise-cracking, Chandler Bing-esque TV banterer into an action movie legend with the 1988 now-classic. Even though it almost killed him.
