How Rachel Bloom Turned a Standup Show Into a Death-Defying Solo Musical

Gordon Cox Theater Editor Rachel Bloom remembers the exact moment that she decided her latest stage project, “Death, Let Me Do My Show,” couldn’t be the lightweight standup show she was hoping it would be. It was when she stood in front of a white board looking at an outline of the jokes she intended to tell, reading phrases like “pregnancy tests” and “my butthole is like the hurricane.” Listen to this week’s “Stagecraft” podcast below: “There’s nothing dumber than seeing standup bits or comedy songs bullet-pointed out,” Bloom says on the latest episode of “Stagecraft,” Variety’s theater podcast.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic It’s been a challenging time lately for Maren Morris in the country music world, as her views on key issues of the day have been in conflict with those of some of country’s more right-leaning artists or fans. She addresses the toll this has taken on her in a music video that came out Friday morning for a new song, “The Tree,” that makes it clear she’s feeling some estrangement from the genre, or even ready to think about moving on — although, ironically, the style of the song couldn’t be more country.

DJ Annie Mac tells MPs tells music industry has “tidal wave” of sexual abuse cases

BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Macmanus has claimed that there is a “tidal wave” of sexual abuse cases throughout the music industry that have yet to come to light. The broadcaster described the music business as “a boys’ club” which was “kind of rigged against women” when speaking to a House of Commons committee, and claimed that many women have yet to come forward with their stories out of fear for their careers.“There needs to be some sort of a shift in women feeling like they’re able to speak out without their careers being compromised, [but] I don’t know how that can happen,” the DJ said when speaking to the Women and Equalities Committee (via BBC News).“I feel like there are a lot of revelations that have not been exposed… It’s infuriating, the amount of women who have stories of sexual assault that just kind of buried them and carried them. It’s just unbelievable.”She continued: “So I do think if something were to happen, like if one person was to speak that had enough profile where it got media attention, I think there could be a kind of tidal wave of it.
