A mum who was diagnosed with bowel cancer after she collapsed at work is now urging others to get checked out if "your body doesn't feel right". Michelle Grant, 44, feared she might have a brain tumour after suffering a sudden seizure but all her test results came back clear.
A few months later in 2020, the mum had another seizure and she was put onto medication which she said gave her constipation, the Liverpool ECHO reports. Michelle knew something wasn't right and phoned her doctor but was just told it was a common side effect of the medication and was given laxatives.
Her unusual symptoms, which "weren't even in Google", worsened and she began to experience bloody mucus and a weird smell in her hands and faeces. Michelle said doctors kept putting it down to her medication and it wasn't until she uncontrollably soiled herself one day while walking home from work, that she finally received her diagnosis.
The mum-of-one said she "knew that something was not normal" and rang her GP to arrange a face to face appointment. She was referred for further tests before the results of a colonoscopy revealed she had stage two bowel cancer.
She said: "The consultant was baffled that it hadn't shown in my iron because bowel cancer usually shows in your iron in your bloods, but it hadn't come up. So he said he thought it was [caught] early."
Michelle added: "I was lucky really but I think if I hadn't have pushed it and pushed it I wouldn't have caught it so early. I wanted to show people that if your body doesn't feel right to [go get checked out]."
