‘Mr. Malcolm’s List’ Review: Not A Jane Austen Masterwork, But Offers Sparkling Pleasures Regardless

Moviegoing is definitely back with viewers flocking to franchise films that 1) continue to roll out in the first sustained barrage of big new titles since Covid, and 2) continue to do huge business as they stick around in theaters. They’re sucking up screens and exacerbating a release-pattern quandary for independent distributors seeking signs that a rising tide raises all boats.

As familiar as the genre’s conventions may be, they never seem to get old with audiences, who can be counted upon to lap up this Bleecker Street release when it opens July 1, both in theaters and online.

Jane Austen's classic Persuasion is coming to Netflix and fans cannot contain their excitement. However, many are complaining that Dakota Johnson's depiction of the main character Anne Elliot is a little off. We can all fight over the best period dramas and book-to-movie adaptations that have a historical setting - but most will agree that Jane Austen's stories are a delight to read and watch.

The story revolves around Anne Elliot (played by Dakota Johnson in the film), an isolated 27-year-old struggling to move on after she broke her engagement with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), after being persuaded by family friend Lady Russell (Nikki Amuka-Bird).After seven years, the two come back into each other’s orbit when Anne’s family rents their home to his sister and her husband.
