Canneseries Adds ‘Maxima,’ the Dutch Royal Drama From Beta Film, Millstreet Films

Holly Jones Germany’s Beta Film (“Babylon Berlin”) sets its sights on the Croisette for the world premiere of Dutch Royal drama “Máxima,” selected to screen out-of-competition at Canneseries on April 9. In tow, Delfina Chaves (“The Secret of the Greco Family”), who portrays the titular character in the series that Variety recently likened to Emmy-Award-Winning Netflix Drama “The Crown.” Teased at last month’s London TV Screenings, the six-part drama series unravels the love story between then Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander (Martijn Lakemeier) and his enigmatic Argentine love interest, Máxima, who goes on to become Queen, at his side.

Christopher Vourlias Palestinian director Hana Elias’ “If These Stones Could Talk,” which follows a Palestinian man’s return to his homeland to restore his family’s ancestral garden, and Argentine filmmaker María Silvia Esteve’s “Mailin,” about a woman’s painful struggle to overcome her childhood trauma, took the top prizes at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival’s industry award ceremony Wednesday night. During an emotionally charged conclusion to the festival’s Agora strand, in which several filmmakers voiced their strident support for Palestine and called for a ceasefire to the more than five-month-old Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, a tearful Elias took the stage alongside producer Asmahan Bkerat to receive the top prize in the Agora’s pitching forum, a €10,000 ($10,900) cash prize from the International Emerging Film Talents Assn. (IEFTA).

The movie follows 10-year-old Hana, whose dreams transport her across various eras in Japanese history, and have the ability to save humanity. The jury’s special award went to “The Complex Forms,” Italian director Fabio D’Orta’s debut feature.

Carolyn Giardina “Oppenheimer” collected more trophies on Sunday night as it topped the feature competition at the 71st annual Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards. During a ceremony held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, the team from Christopher Nolan’s drama about the father of the atomic bomb won a pair of awards in the categories of effects/Foley and dialogue/ADR. Also in the feature categories, “Maestro” won the award for music editing, “Society of the Snow” collected the award for an international feature, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” grabbed the trophy for an animated feature, and “32 Sounds” accepted the documentary prize.
