Anna May Wong is getting her own quarter!
The late actress will be the first Asian-American, and just the seventh woman, to be featured on an US Currency.
The coin, which will go into circulation on October 24, is part of the United States Mint American Women Quarters Program, which honors trailblazing women.
“The fifth coin in our American Women Quarters Program honors Anna May Wong, a courageous advocate who championed for increased representation and more multi-dimensional roles for Asian American actors,” Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson said in a statement. “This quarter is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of accomplishments by Anna May Wong, who overcame challenges and obstacles she faced during her lifetime.”
Anna May, who passed away in 1961, made history in television, becoming the first Asian American lead in a U.S. television show in 1951 with The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong.
The actress is the fifth woman featured in the US Mint’s program this year. Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, and Nina Otero-Warren were also featured on quarters through the program.
Next year Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanakaʻole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief will get their own quarters.
Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony were the only two women before this year to get their own US currency.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that this Marvel actress will portray Anna May in a movie.
