Tom Cruise (Sort Of) Back at Cannes: How Paramount Is Using the Festival to Promote ‘Mission: Impossible 7’

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter A familiar face is back on the Croisette. Well, kind of… Tom Cruise may not be attending this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where “Top Gun: Maverick” premiered in 2022 to massive fanfare, but the star’s presence is enduring in the South of France. For festival attendees, it’s impossible to miss the giant LED screen outside the famed Carlton Hotel, where a trailer of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1” has been playing on loop all week. It’s designed to hype up movie lovers for the seventh installment in the globe-trotting franchise, which has no affiliation with Cannes, but debuts theatrically in July. “We’ve had this location for years because it’s at the heart of the festival action,” says Marc Weinstock, Paramount’s president of worldwide marketing and distribution. “Cannes is a renowned festival with global reach, which is why we chose to screen ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ there. It’s the perfect setting to showcase a Tom Cruise movie.”

Tom Cruise Crashes a Train in New ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1’ Trailer (Video)

Tom Cruise continues to defy the laws of physics for entertainment value in the new trailer for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh installment in the spy-action franchise that ups the ante with each successive film. The action set pieces — largely practical — are the centerpiece of each “Mission” movie: in the first film it was Ethan Hunt dangling over a computer, “M:I 2” was Cruise climbing a cliffface, “M:I 3” had the bridge attack, “Ghost Protocol” saw Cruise hang off the tallest building in the world, “Rogue Nation” put Cruise on the outside of an airplane while it took off, and “Fallout” had a nail-biting skydiving sequence. So what’s on tap for “Dead Reckoning Part One?” For starters, Cruise jumps a motorcycle off a cliff. But then there’s what looks to be the major set piece: a massive practical train action sequence.Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the last two films, “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” and “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” returns to write and direct “M:I 7” and “M:I 8,” with “Dead Reckoning Part Two” still in production.Watch the “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” trailer above.

Simon Pegg Won’t Talk to Tom Cruise About Any ‘Private Beliefs’: It Would ‘Abuse My Privileged Access That I Get to Him’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise have been “Mission: Impossible” co-stars and friends since meeting during the production of J.J. Abrams’ third installment, which opened in theaters in 2006, but that doesn’t mean the two discuss Cruise’s ties to Scientology. During an interview on BBC’s “Desert Island Discs” radio show, Pegg said he does not ask Cruise about anything related to his “personal beliefs” because “that would be me abusing my privileged access that I get to him.” That means Scientology questions are off the table. So what does Pegg talk to Cruise about? Cruise’s mega-fame, for starters. “We joke about it,” Pegg said. “I mean, I always make fun of him for it, you know, about the things that he can access. We were filming in South Africa recently on this mountain and then he decided he wanted to swim with sharks. He flew us in a helicopter to this seaside part and we dived with sharks. At the end of the day we said, ‘That was a real Tom Cruise kind of day.’ He kind of appreciates the ridiculousness of it sometimes.”
