PBS Documentary Series ‘Independent Lens’ Acquires ‘Outta The Muck’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Naman Ramachandran PBS documentary anthology series “Independent Lens” has acquired the documentary feature “Outta The Muck” from directors Ira Mckinley and Bhawin Suchak, who previously co-directed award-winning documentary “The Throwaways.” Based on Mckinley’s family roots, the film, a narrative of Black achievement, tells the story of a fiercely self-determined family in the deep south as it resists despair with love. It blends family, football and history in an intimate portrait of the Dean family, longtime residents of the historic town of Pahokee, Florida and journeys back home with McKinley as he reconnects with his niece Bridget and nephew Alvin and explores their shared family history that spans seven generations.

Jason Owen’s Sandbox Lands Film and TV Deal With Sony Music; June Carter Cash Documentary on Deck (EXCLUSIVE)

Chris Willman Music WriterSandbox Entertainment president-CEO Jason Owen, one of Nashville’s top management figures, has signed a deal with Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division to produce long-form film, television and digital projects, with the “definitive” June Carter Cash documentary among the first of their collaborations to be announced. The companies say that over a period of years they plan to develop “a library of projects that tell the stories of music, history, and culture set in the South” — very familiar stomping ground for Owen, a leading figure in Nashville’s music industry who currently helps guide the careers of Kacey Musgraves, Dan + Shay, Little Big Town, Faith Hill and Kelsea Ballerini. The June Carter Cash doc will combine interviews with family members with archival footage culled from “unprecedented access to the Cash estate,” much of it, of course, related to her husband Johnny Cash or her lineage before that as part of the 20th century’s first family of country music.

Tool announce unsigned ‘Fear Inoculum’ box set for £485 less than signed version

Tool have announced details of a regular, unsigned ‘Fear Inoculum’ box set, on sale for £485 less than the controversial signed edition. After it was announced earlier this week, the $810 (£600) signed box set of the band’s 2019 album, which will only be available to fans who bought the Toolarmy VIP tickets to the forthcoming dates on their current US tour, fans expressed their annoyance at the high price tag.The band appeared to lower the price to $750 (£560) at later shows, but it was then revealed that the $60 price drop was due to a particular venue on the tour not charging service fees and taxes.Following the controversy surrounding the deluxe edition, the band have now announced a regular, unsigned ‘Fear Inoculum’ box set, due for release on April 8 for the significantly reduced price of $169.98 (£127).The new, cheaper box set appears to feature all the same goodies as the original – five discs of 180-gram vinyl, with music on one side and etched art on the other, all under the creative direction of Adam Jones – and the only thing missing is the autographs.A post shared by Tool (@toolmusic)Elsewhere, another reissue is in the works from the band, with plans shared this week for a 30th anniversary reissue of 1992 EP ‘Opiate’.The reissue will feature a re-imagined and extended version of the title track (available to stream from March 1), alongside a short film and 46-page art book featuring behind-the-scenes and making-of photos, interviews and more, available on March 18.Tool released ‘Fear Inoculum’, their fifth studio album, in August of 2019.

UK vinyl sales set to overtake CDs in 2022

Music Week reports that while BPI’s 2021 unit sales data showed that CDs remained ahead of vinyl, the latter is poised to become the dominant physical format in terms of revenue.Vinyl albums brought in £135.6million in 2021 (up 23.2 per cent year-on-year) compared to £150.1million in CD sales (down 3.9 per cent year-on-year). On this current growth trajectory, vinyl will be ahead by the end of this year.In terms of unit sales, 14.4million CDs were sold in the UK last year (down 10.5 per cent year-on-year) compared to 5.3million vinyl LPs (up 10.6 per cent).Sony Music UK VP of market planning and sales Charles Wood told Music Week that he believes vinyl will become the largest physical contributor to labels in terms of revenue during the next 12 months.“Following an uplift of interest in vinyl sales during Covid, we saw that vinyl was being purchased by a broader audience, beyond your music fanatics and niche format obsessives that drove the ‘vinyl revival’,” Wood said.“We saw continued growth for vinyl sales in 2021 – now making up 27 per cent of the physical market in terms of volume.

‘Redemption of a Rogue’ Review: Audacious Black Comedy Augurs a New Talent in the Vein of Martin and John Michael McDonagh

Alissa Simon Film CriticThe exhilarating, Bible-inspired, pitch-black comedy “Redemption of a Rogue” centers on a prodigal son returning to his rural Ireland hometown to seek redemption for his sins. Based on this ambitious, sardonic feature debut, writer-director Philip Doherty (who is also a playwright and theater director) scores as a promising talent, one who might be the spiritual heir of Anglo-Irish filmmaking brothers Martin and John Michael McDonagh or even the Coen brothers.
