Labour politicians from across Greater Manchester have met with members of the Muslim community as pressure mounts on the party over its stance on the Israel-Gaza war. Mayor Andy Burnham was joined by Gorton MP Afzal Khan and council leaders from across the city-region at the meeting in Whalley Range this afternoon (October 27).
It comes after Mr Burnham called for a 'humanitarian ceasefire' in a statement signed by leaders of the 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester as well as deputy mayor Kate Green. The statement 'condemns unreservedly' the 'appalling' terror attacks on innocent civilians in Israel by Hamas, the Palestinian group which controls the Gaza Strip.
It recognises that Israel has 'the right to take targeted action within international law', but raises concerns about the 'loss of thousands of innocent lives in Gaza' and 'widespread suffering' through the blockade of 'essential' goods and services. The Labour Party has not called for a ceasefire so far, instead supporting 'humanitarian pauses' in fighting.
