EXCLUSIVE: Veteran BA executive Masami Yamamoto is leaving NBCUniversal where she has spent the majority of her career to date — more than 23 years — most recently as President, Business Operations for Universal Studio Group.
Yamamoto, who will depart at the end of 2023 and plans to take a gap year, shared the news of her pending exit in an internal memo, which is livelier and wittier than your garden-variety executive exit letter. (You can read it full below.)
A search for Yamamoto’s replacement will start right away, with Jeremy Adell, USG’s EVP Business Affairs, stepping into the position in the interim.
Yamamoto was promoted to President, Business Operations across Universal Studio Group — comprised by Universal Television, UCP, Universal International Studios and Universal Television Alternative Studio — in 2020.
Over the past more than three years, “we went through many changes, but disruptions offered opportunities and the ability to evolve our business,” Yamamoto wrote in her note to staff. “We worked to put together standardized deal-making across the studios (and even across the pond and the Pacific Ocean). We built our own team agreements, instilled best practices, and are currently leveraging the scope and momentum of USG to make the best deals possible – as one team.”
Yamamoto, who started off as an attorney at the law firm O’Melveny & Myers, began her career at NBC in 2000 in Legal Affairs, working on programming produced and acquired by NBC before moving to Business Affairs in 2001. In 2016 her purview grew beyond the network to include studio scripted programming as EVP, Business Affairs, Scripted Programming for NBC Entertainment and Universal Television.
