Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Martin Scorsese can do a lot of things — just don’t ask him to dance. The 81-year-old filmmaker’s daughter Francesca says her dad has been open to do most anything in their wildly popular TikToks, but he’s not so keen on busting a move. “He refuses to do dances,” Francesca told me Wednesday at Vanity Fair and Instagram’s Young Hollywood pre-Oscars party at Bar Marmont.

Oscar predictions 2024: Who will win vs. who should win this year

If Christopher Nolan’s brilliant story of the father of the atomic bomb loses, it’ll be the biggest upset since the surprise victory of “Shakespeare in Love” over “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999. It’s won just about every other major award it’s been nominated for, and rightly so. “American Fiction”“Anatomy of a Fall”“Barbie”“The Holdovers”“Killers of the Flower Moon”“Maestro”“Past Lives”“Poor Things”“The Zone of Interest”The Battle of the Stones (Gladstone vs. Emma Stone) has raged all season long. But Gladstone’s triumph at the SAG Awards, for her role as a wronged Native American woman, should get her across the ultimate finish line. The German actress turned in a stunning duo of performances, in “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest,” that made her a talked-about topic for months. ‘Spaceman’ Review: Adam Sandler Confronts The Galaxy’s Sad Loneliness In Johan Renck’s Existential Cosmonaut Film [Berlinale]

Imagine a movie akin to a sad David Bowie song about an astronaut drifting alone into the dark abyss of space, contemplating his life, his lost love, his past, and an uncertain, perhaps soon-to-be-shortly doomed future. Sing the wistfully estranged and reflective “Space Odyssey” tune and the lamenting iconic line, “Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows!” That’s Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck’s “Spaceman” in a nutshell, which makes for possibly the weirdest, most existentially lonely movie Adam Sandler has ever starred in.

‘Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger’ Review: Scorsese Pays Tribute To British Cinema’s Visionaries – Berlin Film Festival

It’s not often that a doc about the transformative power of cinema will deliberately use bad clips of the movies it’s talking about, but that’s part of the point of this insightful, sprawling film, corralled by director David Hinton. Though the masterpieces made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger at the height of their big-screen, Technicolor powers were visually impeccable, their subversive emotional power could still pack a punch through a 16-inch TV screen, even from the most scratched, butchered, and washed-out black-and-white prints.
