Celtic legend Martin O'Neill has revealed his family were ordered out of their hotel before an Old Firm derby in 2000 - because they'd accidentally booked a stay in Rangers' usual base.
O'Neill's first season as Celtic manager will forever be fondly remembered in Parkhead folklore as they romped to a domestic treble ahead of their city rivals. The tone was set for the season with a romping 6-2 win, dubbed the 'Demolition Derby,' with Chris Sutton bagging a hat-trick and Henrik Larsson scoring his famous chip over Stefan Klos.
Writing in his new book On Days Like These , the legendary manager tells the story of how his wife and daughter had booked a stay in the Crutherland Hotel in East Kilbride - only to find out the Rangers team were also staying there. Not only that, they had a contract with the hotel - which Gers threatened to cancel if they weren't evicted.
Writing in a passage of his new book, published by The Scotsman, O'Neill said: “It transpires that the Rangers manager has been told that my wife and daughter are in the hotel. Rangers use the Crutherland as a base for many of their games and have a contract with them. If Geraldine and Alana don’t leave immediately, Rangers will cancel their contract with the hotel."
He explained further: “It was astounding! I had stayed there during that week. You’d have thought someone might have just come up and said, 'you know, by the way Rangers stay here'.
"I tried to make a little bit of a joke by saying I don’t think Stefan Klos or whichever had a photograph of my wife in his pocket. I don’t think that would have been top of the list.
"My wife could not have known Dick Advocaat and he certainly would not have known her. In all honesty, it was probably just the hotel
