Manchester United transfer business under spotlight in 'good deal' or 'bad deal'

A summer overhaul was needed at Old Trafford to help Manchester United get back to dining at the Premier League's top table — but so far it has been a source of frustration for fans and staff alike.

After last season's sixth-placed finish meant United missed out on a Champions League place, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign was followed by an equally uninspiring stint in the hot-seat by Ralf Rangnick, a new start was required. Enter Erik ten Hag and a new recruitment structure off the field.

A host of big-name players departed early in the summer. Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard all left the club, and the hopes were high that a transformative rebuild would get United competing for the title again.

It has been a chaotic summer, however. A seemingly scattergun approach to recruitment and two ongoing transfer sagas have dominated the window.

Frenkie de Jong has been long sought after, with complications over a potential move from Barcelona, while Cristiano Ronaldo's bid to move from Old Trafford just a year after rejoining in a spectacular deal has cast a cloud over the club. All the while, potential targets have come and gone.

So far, only a handful of arrivals have joined Ten Hag on the red side of Manchester. Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia have followed the manager from the Eredivisie, while Christian Eriksen signed on a free transfer from Brentford.
