Rangnick's magic touch
Ralf Rangnick has spent most of this week explaining his decision to take Cristiano Ronaldo off against Brentford, but it was almost guaranteed that the Portuguese forward would spend the entire 90 minutes on the pitch against West Ham.
One point Rangnick did make is that one of the players he bought on in that game scored and he is showing himself to have the Midas touch with replacements now.
When Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani came on together with 10 minutes to go against West Ham it felt like 73,000 pairs of eyes were focused on fourth official Michael Salisbury, but Ronaldo stayed on.
Marcus Rashford had come on for Anthony Elanga earlier in the game and it meant United finished the game with four forwards on the pitch, but the aggressive replacements earned all three points.
Rangnick would have been beaming when Martial drove into space, played a slide-rule pass to Cavani and he crossed for Rashford to tap in at the back post. Cue bedlam at Old Trafford, a nervy VAR check and then more bedlam. Three substitutes combined to score United's winner.
Had Ronaldo not kicked up such a fuss in midweek maybe he would have been withdrawn. Rangnick instead waited until the final 10 minutes before rolling the dice. It allowed West Ham some promising moments but was ultimately vindicated with some stunning late drama.
Control
For 94 minutes United had control at Old Trafford. In terms of Rangnick’s prized commodity, this was the most complete performance since beating Crystal Palace in his first game in charge.
United dominated possession and never looked troubled defensively, but they lacked a cutting edge of their own until the replacements combined to score that thrilling late winner.
