There are plenty of professional sportsmen who in their younger years were avid lovers of both football and cricket.
Phil and Gary Neville both played cricket to a good standard while Gary Lineker and Joe Hart also had a passion for the sound of leather on willow. Paul Scholes can also be counted on that list it seems.
He enjoyed cricket so much that he even turned out for Middleton after making his Manchester United debut in 1994. Sir Alex Ferguson quickly put a stop to that and the midfielder didn’t pick up a bat again for another 20 years.

Scholes had been part of the Middleton team up until the age of 17, featuring alongside Lancashire hero Kyle Hogg, who retired in 2014. The United legend returned to the game last year, featuring for Oldham side Uppermill in the Greater Manchester Cricket League.
Hogg recalled how natural all-rounder Scholes looked when he stepped back into the middle despite not playing for two decades. “Paul Scholes played all the T20s with us and he was brilliant,” Hogg told the ECB.
“Before last year, he’d not played cricket for 20 years. But when he went out to bat, he was looking around the field and quickly assessing where his scoring options were.
“I guess you could almost see the midfielder he was come through. He assessed things so quickly.” Unfortunately, Scholes tore his groin last year and is yet to pick up a ball this calendar year.
