Wes Brown has branded Jamie Carragher “silly” for trying to compare Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic.
Carragher sparked a flurry of debate on social media when he argued that Van Dijk was a better defender than five-time Premier League winner Vidic, after criticism was aimed at the Liverpool defender upon Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
The Sky Sports pundit referenced Vidic’s performances against Fernando Torres during his stay at United, inferring he struggled against the striker. One of those to hit back at Carragher was Rio Ferdinand who questioned the "myth" regarding his former United defensive partner.

And now, another ex-teammate has weighed in on the debate, with Brown stating that it is too premature for Carragher to start casting such assessments at this point in Van Dijk’s career.
Speaking on the Manchester United show The Debate for MUTV, the Champions League winner said: “Carragher - listen, I’m Man United, he’s Liverpool. Everyone knows Van Dijk is an unbelievable player, we all know that.
“But to compare someone who is still in their career to someone who’s finished is a little bit silly. At the end of Van Dijk’s career, he might have the same stuff Vidic does but until that happens I don’t think you can really compare the two.
“Vidic was doing it for so long, he helped us so much. Both are very good players but for me, Vidic, he did it far too long to have a comparison yet.”
Brown hailed the quality of Vidic, who left Old Trafford in 2014 after winning the Champions League, five league titles, a Club World Cup, three League Cups and seven Community Shields during an eight-year stay.
