Jonny Evans withdrew from the Manchester United starting XI "at the last minute" before their victory against Liverpool.
Evans, who has been managing a knock in recent weeks, withdrew from the Northern Ireland squad last week but was set to start in the FA Cup quarter-final.
However, the 36-year-old failed a fitness test in United's final training session and manager Erik ten Hag recalled Aaron Wan-Bissaka for his first start since recovering from a two-month lay-off with a leg injury.
Right back Wan-Bissaka started at left back, where Victor Lindelof was due to continue had Evans been fit enough to start.
"If you see this season, we have had so many setbacks all the time, players dropping out. And every time we have to adapt.
"Yesterday, Jonny Evans, last minute of the training dropped out. Then we have to adjust to bring a player in who didn't train, didn't play for four or five weeks and he had only one or two training sessions with the team.

"And Azza - Aaron Wan-Bissaka - was playing so well but the team adjusted also to that, we had to change. So we can deal better with such situations.
"Where we were in the autumn, it was difficult to adjust when we had all the injuries. What you see now: January, February, March, we can deal better with this and still we have a lot of injuries but we can deal with it, we get all our wins.
"I am very proud of the run we are in but we know we still have to catch up. We are happy with the loss of Spurs, Villa dropped points, we are happy to be in the semi-finals.
"We are getting better and defending better so I am happy with the progress of this team."
