Sheringham's transfer to United in 1997 soon led to a near-physical confrontation with Cole after an on-field disagreement, revealing underlying tensions not just between the strikers but also involving captain Keane.
In the Amazon Prime documentary 99, which delves into United's iconic season and the preceding decade, Sheringham commented on team dynamics, saying: "Like any workplace, there's people you do like and there's people you don't like. Me and Coley (Cole) just didn't rub each other up the right way from the word go."
Cole revealed some locker room antics, stating: "Teddy joined Manchester United, that season I remember conceding a goal. He turned around to me and said 'That was your fault'. My head was absolutely steaming then.
"I got into the dressing room and I lunged at him, I was just about to throw a punch. By the time I realised, Roy [Keane] was trying to fight him."
