A homeowner was left gobsmacked to discover that a woodpecker had hidden away its 'entire life savings' inside his walls. The concerned resident contacted Nick Castro, owner of Nick's Extreme Pest Control when he spotted 'maggots and mealworms' crawling around inside his home.
The man from Glen Ellen, California thought an animal may have found its way into his wall and died so he called out a professional for help, the Mirror reports. When Nick arrived at the home, he cut a small hole into the wall in the upstairs bedroom and was shocked to discover tens of thousands of acorns pouring out the opening.
The acorns piled up to around 20ft high, weighing a hefty 700 pounds. Nick took to Facebook to explain the bizarre experience as he said: "Came across this on a job. Bird was a bit of a hoarder.
"Filled up about eight garbage bags full of acorns weighing in about 700 lbs. Unreal never came across something like this."
The bird did not only leave the shocked homeowner with an enormous mess to tidy up but also holes all over his house to fill. Nick investigated the entire house and discovered holes in the chimney stack which led him to believe the creature had been stashing his acorns there for two to five years.
Nick added: "This bird stored food all over. There's clear woodpecker holes all over the house. Acorns stored all over siding and trim. It's completely destroyed the exterior of house with all the holes everywhere.
"This bird was crazy we actually saw him there when we were there putting more in the holes he created." Nick was able to repair the damage the bird had caused and blocked all of its entry points into the man's home, hopefully leaving his customer with an acorn-free house to live in going forward.
