Former Love Island star Matthew MacNabb has revealed that he broke down and cried to the show’s psychologists. Strategic marketing consultant Matthew appeared on season seven of the show in 2021 alongside contestants like Chloe Burrows, Toby Aromolaran, Faye Winter and the series winners, Liam Reardon and Millie Court.
Matthew entered the villa on day 29, and soon enough, Kaz Kamwi chose him to couple up with until he was dumped from the island on day 45.The Belfast local has now spoken openly about his time on the show, as he didn’t have the easiest experience following the death of a close friend. "I shouldn't have been there in a way,” he explained.
He continued to say that he felt out of place and, even now, is still battling feelings of imposter syndrome. According to the dictionary, imposter syndrome is “the persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills.” When Matthew joined the show, he was already struggling following the death of a close friend.
Describing his life as "crazy", he explained: "From one of my best friends passing away two weeks before Love Island, to entering the villa and experiencing all that came with it. "I haven’t told anyone this, but I met with the psychologist when I was in the villa and cried for a solid hour.
"She helped me so much and made me realise that this life is an adventure and with any adventure, there are ups and there are downs." Since appearing on the show, Matthew has gone on to star in the Irish version of Strictly Come Dancing, where he was partnered with Laura Nolan. He competed against the likes of Billy McGuinness, Nicolas Roche and Erica-Cody before he was eliminated eighth.
