Local residents described seeing police arrive outside the pub shortly after 6pm last night. One eyewitness said they drove past and lots of police and girls outside "crying."
Another witness, who claims another man stepped in to help, said customers had been locked inside the Wetherspoons pub for their own safety. There is no suggestion the violence was linked to the venue.
In a statement, GMP said: "Officers were called to Market Street, Heywood, at around 5.40pm yesterday (2 May) to reports of a group of males fighting.
"One man was arrested on suspicion of affray and assault of an emergency worker."
Wetherspoons said they would not be commenting on the incident.
