Liam Fox is confident that if his Dundee United players can cut out the mistakes then they have the quality to scramble out of the relegation mire.
United should have taken a point at home to St Johnstone at the weekend but a massive blunder from keeper Mark Birighitti left them empty-handed. Costly errors have United rooted to the foot of the table and now they have a massive game away to second-bottom Ross County this weekend.
Fox has insisted it is all about remaining United and battling through the current hard times. The head coach admitted: “We have big games coming up and beforehand we knew that would be the case whatever the outcome on Saturday. We are away to Ross County next, we’ll stick together, myself, the staff and players. If we can keep putting in performances and cut out the mistakes I believe we can still get to where we need to get to.”
The Saints’ setback was a sore one because Fox had opened up and gone with a 4-3-3 formation. His United team were more than worthy of their point until they shot themselves in the foot.
The defeat piles on the pressure with rivals Motherwell pulling clear and leaving just three points separating the bottom three, with United having a game in hand over their rivals. Fox stated: “I thought the players were brave, they took the ball and they passed it well.
“We just need to dust ourselves down and get going again this weekend. There is real, real frustration from everyone - not just the players but from the staff as well.
“We effectively gave a point away because of a moment of madness. It was bad decision-making, we had worked incredibly hard to get back into the game so it leaves a real bad taste in the mouth, at the minimum we should have gone away with a point.”
