Hearts have had their appeal against Lawrence Shankland’s booking for diving in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Ross County booted out.
The Jambos skipper was penalised by referee Grant Irvine after going down in the box under a challenge from Ryan Leak with the score at 2-0 to County. Video replays appeared to show contact but referee Irvine awarded County a foul and issued Shankland a yellow card. Steven Naismith hit out at the decision at full-time and Hearts officials submitted a ‘wrongful caution’ appeal on Monday. But after listening to their case and looking at video footage of the incident this afternoon, an independent tribunal at Hampden backed Irvine’s decision meaning the yellow card stands.
It’s the second time the Jambos have appealed a booking handed out to one of their players against County this season. Back in December, Alan Forrest had his caution for going down in the box after a challenge from Staggies keeper Ross Laidlaw revoked.
Naismith said on Saturday: “It wasn't a dive by Shankland. There is no simulation. The defender stretches his leg out to block the ball and Shanks goes over. I thought the ref was naive to show a [yellow] card. I think he could have let the game go, I don't think it was a foul, no-one looked for a foul."
Meanwhile, Barrie McKay will step up his Hearts return in a bounce game against Dundee this week. The winger has only made seven appearances this season and the last of those coming in the derby win over Hibs on December 27.
McKay missed over three months at the beginning of the campaign with a torn posterior cruciate ligament and has struggled with another knee injury since the capital clash over the festive period. But his return is edging closer and will be a major boost to Steven
