An intersection in Silver Lake recently designated as historic for its connection with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy’s classic 1932 film, The Music Box, will soon get its own sign.
The City Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to name the intersection of Vendome Street and Del Monte Drive as the “1932 site of the `The Music Box’ Starring Laurel and Hardy.”
Laurel and Hardy won an Academy Award for short comedy for the work, which was
filmed on the Music Box Steps in Silver Lake. The premise is simple: the lads have to deliver a huge piano to a house at the top of the steps.
There’s a surprise ending to their efforts. Watch the short above for it.
The steps are visited by fans from around the world.
“Silver Lake is home to so many historic outdoor staircases, contributing to the rich cultural fabric of our community,” L.A. City Councilman Hugo Soto-Martínez said in a statement. “We are proud to recognize this small but mighty landmark in the history of our city’s most important industry.”
The Music Box Steps already are marked with a plaque erected by the Hollywood Heritage Museum, The Society of Operating Cameramen, and The Silver Lake Improvement Association.
The Silver Lake Improvement Association will host its annual “Music Box Steps Day Festival” at Laurel and Hardy Park, across the street from the Music Box Steps.

Editor’s Note: Journalist David Blum might have forever coined The Brat Pack era, but it was Carl Kurlander who provided the reason the infamous New York article got written. St. Elmo’s Fire was a script Kurlander wrote with director Joel Schumacher, inspired by events in his life. Now an academic, Kurlander has written several guest columns for Deadline including a 35th anniversary remembrance of St. Elmo’s Fire. Why is he tapping again into those memories? He just watched Brats, the Hulu documentary that premiered at Tribeca, directed by and starring Andrew McCarthy. He was part of the St. Elmo’s Fire ensemble that felt maligned by a mag article published the week before the film was released and became a surprise hit. Here, Kurlander supplies some great dish — did you know Demi Moore‘s drug demons almost forced Joel Schumacher to replace her with the young singer Madonna? Or that Georgetown shunned the movie for immoral activity but OK’d The Exorcist because despite the vile goings on involving a possessed child, evil didn’t win? A little of that stuff would have helped McCarthy’s docu, which gets tedious as he attempts to expunge demons, even as cohorts like Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy seem to be humoring him on camera. After all, that film launched fine futures for them, even if the moniker stung. McCarthy paints journo Blum as a villain, but in fairness, The Brat Pack was a far more clever coinage than putting “gate” on the end of every scandal since Watergate. Blum also unwittingly etched into permanent Hollywood history the memory of those actors when they were young and gorgeous. Who wants to be forgotten?

Brent Lang Executive Editor When Michael Angarano was trying to get “Sacramento,” his indie buddy comedy about two friends who go on a road trip to a certain state capital off the ground, the question he’d get was always the same. Does it really need to be set in Sacramento? “At one point we were ready to shoot the movie in Atlanta — we had the financing and everything,” remembers Angarano, who directed the film, as well as co-wrote it. “And this was for a movie called ‘Sacramento.’ But it’s like why try to cheat it? Maybe, we should we just call it ‘Athens’ or ‘Savannah’?” And even though Angarano and his co-writer Chris Smith weren’t that familiar with the city that inspired their film, its appearance on a highway sign, informing them of the California city’s distance from Los Angeles, was foundational.
