South Korea has delivered hit after hit for Netflix — but actors barely get paid

told the Los Angeles Times that attempts to arrange a meeting with Netflix — to demand that members be compensated with the same residual model as American members of SAG-AFTRA — have gone unanswered for months.“One of [Netflix’s] first priorities when entering the local market should be to establish some channel of communication with groups like us,” the country’s answer to Fran Drescher said.“But there’s no answer at all.”Residuals have recently been in the news as American actors and writers striking for fair compensation post their often insultingly meager checks, ranging from a single penny to a few dollars. As opposed to the royalties paid in broadcasting, residuals must be paid in perpetuity to actors in the United States, based on how many times their films and shows are streamed.

Is the ‘Mission: Impossible’ Series Due for a Reckoning?

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic When did the “Mission: Impossible” films become action movies? I’m not sure when that happened, but I do know this much: For a series like the one in question, it’s live by the action, die by the action. For a few days there, people were chattering about all the great action in “Dead Reckoning Part One,” talking up the Fiat car chase or that train-dangling-from-a-cliff climax as if we’d never seen a sequence like that one before.

‘Mob Land’ Review: John Travolta Patrols an Indie Crime Drama That Is Strong on Atmosphere but Short on Originality

Joe Leydon Film Critic Writer-director Nicholas Maggio may not have intended to be self-critical when, fairly early in his debut feature “Mob Land,” he has one character observe to another about their failing small Southern town, “This whole place has become a fucking cliché.” But the longer this slackly paced rural noir continues, the more that dialogue seems in retrospect like fair warning. Borrowing freely from “No Country for Old Men,” “Collateral” and maybe a dozen or so other superior films, Maggio has cobbled together a modestly diverting, effectively atmospheric but blatantly derivative crime drama sprinkled with a few joltingly nasty plot twists.

Teyonah Parris on Transforming Into a ‘Hood Superhero’ for Netflix’s ‘They Cloned Tyrone’

Angelique Jackson Teyonah Parris has stepped into plenty of shoes in her career — from “Dear White People” and “Mad Men” to “If Beale Street Could Talk” and, more recently, as Marvel superhero Monica Rambeau. But no shoes quite compare to the mustard yellow, thigh-high boots and chaps she wore as Yo-Yo in Netflix’s new pulpy conspiracy caper “They Cloned Tyrone.” “The minute I put on all those elements, I felt Yo-Yo,” Parris told Variety at a press junket for the film in late June. Parris laughed brightly as she recalls slipping into the role — a working girl who teams up with Fontaine (John Boyega), a local dope boy, and her pimp, Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), to expose a government conspiracy that touches every corner of their community, from the barbershop and the beauty salon to the local fried chicken joint.

‘Justified’ sequel series: An unnecessary return to the neo-noir Western crime drama

Hulu, there’s plenty for fans of the original show to dig into. But if you missed the first incarnation of “Justified,” “City Primeval” stands on its own without much confusion, since it’s an isolated story set outside of Kentucky with no obscure side characters or plotlines from the original series. The series begins with Raylan driving across Florida to bring his teen daughter Willa (Vivian Olyphant, Timothy’s real-life daughter) to a disciplinary summer camp. His journey is immediately waylaid by two wannabe criminals, leading him to testify about what happened at a hearing in Detroit. There, Judge Guy (Keith David) and lawyer Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis) are unimpressed by Raylan’s attitude (and his tactics, which includes rough treatment of the thugs). Nevertheless, Judge Guy ropes Raylan into sticking around Detroit for longer than planned, to work with the Detroit PD on a task force that’s investigating a recent murder attempt against the judge.
