A man who was seen armed with a knife in Derby has died in hospital after being shot by armed officers in a police station car park, Derbyshire Constabulary said.
Officers reported seeing the man in the car park of Ascot Drive police station, in Derby, at 9.55am on Friday, the force said. Armed officers were called and shot the man at 10.03am, it added. The man was treated by officers until paramedics arrived.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance but declared dead on arrival. No one else was hurt.
The force said inquiries were ongoing to identify the man who died and contact his next of kin.
A cordon has been put in place and shops within the area are shut. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been informed.
Customers shopping in stores close to the scene heard "six gunshots" ring out this morning, sparking an evacuation of a B&M store.
Aerial images show a shattered glass door at Ascot Drive police station, with medical equipment and clothes left scattered on the pavement.
Emma Smalley, 28, who was shopping in B&M at the time of the shooting, told DerbyshireLive : "We heard about six massive bangs and didn’t know what it was at the time. Everyone got evacuated. I’ve had to leave everything in there.
“I just thought it was banging. I didn’t know whether it was a delivery for B&M or someone in the warehouse. It was noisy.
“It’s quite scary to think that if I’d been any later getting there I could’ve witnessed it. I’ve got a three-year-old with me as well.”
Another witness, Tom Parker, 26, said: "We were in the factory just further down from Ascot Drive and we heard around six gunshots and then came running outside and saw about six to eight police cars came firing past.
"It was pretty scary."
