An Indiana mother was reportedly sentenced to 115 years in prison earlier this month for poisoning her ex-boyfriend's oatmeal and strangling him during a custody battle.  Following a seven-day trial, Heidi Marie Littlefield was found guilty of murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder in August by a jury in Hamilton County. The Hamilton County prosecutor said Francis Kelley had been killed by asphyxiation last year due to manual strangulation or neck compression, with acute fentanyl intoxication listed as a contributing factor in his death.

As the battle over parental rights and protections for LGBT students heats up in Virginia, one state delegate said she will introduce a bill in the legislature's next session that would make it a crime for a parent or guardian not to affirm their child's sexual orientation or gender identity.  The move is in response to Republican Virginia Gov. A column in The Washington Post claimed voters concerned about violent crime should move to blue states, because "living in a Republican state is much more likely to get you killed." Columnist Dana Milbank attempted to debunk GOP messaging on crime this election by arguing that crime wasn't soaring but actually declining, and claiming it was higher in red states.  The columnist also suggested the Republican focus on crime was racist and "paranoid." "If it’s the fall of a year ending in an even number, you can be pretty sure Republicans will try to scare you with paranoia about crime — specifically, violent crime committed by dark-skinned people," he began. He cited incomplete data from the FBI's annual crime report which found crime in 2021 was stable and overall violent crime had declined by 1 percent from 2020, although homicides were up.Though Milbank admitted the numbers weren't "highly reliable."  The crime report actually lacks complete data from nearly 40% of police departments nationwide.

The White House said Tuesday that President Biden believes Saudi Arabia has effectively sided with Russia’s war aims in Ukraine following the Riyadh-led OPEC+ alliance’s announcement last week that it would cut oil production. "We believe by the decision that OPEC+ made last week, (Saudi Arabia is) certainly aligning themselves with Russia," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a Tuesday briefing.

Wolves from two packs in northeast Washington state have attacked more cattle, prompting the Department of Fish and Wildlife to consider whether to again try culling the Smackout pack after a botched attempt last month. Fish and Wildlife officials confirmed Thursday that the Smackout pack wounded a calf in a private Stevens County pasture, the Capital Press reported. Officials said the pack also injured a calf Monday and probably attacked another on Sept.

Several media outlets criticized Melania Trump’s fashion choice in 2017 when she left to go visit victims of a hurricane, however the same media outlets neglected to mention First Lady Jill Biden’s similar fashion choice during her post-Hurricane Ian Florida visit on Wednesday.  Both President Biden and his wife were photographed leaving for Florida to meet with Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., about ongoing recovery efforts following the Category 4 hurricane hitting the state.
