Kippford residents are raising a stink over plans for a multi-million pound waste water treatment works near their homes.
Scottish Water is seeking permission from the council to build the new facility at the entrance to the holiday village.
The company says new infrastructure is essential and describes its existing plant on Kippford seafront as “a major contributor” to bathing water quality failures at nearby Rockcliffe.
Opponents don’t disagree – but fear the location and duration of the £20 million works could have a “devastating” impact on the tourist trade.
Kippford Association committee member Kay Harriman said: “The site is so visible from our garden.
“It’s going to be a very industrial place right at the entrance to the village.
“For every visitor walking along the pavement it’s going to be the first thing they see.
“Tourism will be devastated during the three years of work and the road is going to be dug up.
“Apart from the two pubs and the tearoom there are a lot of holiday lets here as well.
“It’s a really popular village and nobody will want to come here if that racket is going on.
“Everybody wants clean water – but this is the wrong site.”
According to Ms Harriman, Scottish Water’s original preference was a site much further round the same access road.
She added: “They said they had looked at 14 sites but they have never shown any of them to us.
“The one they propose now is full of granite – and I know what cutting granite sounds like.
“This is the disruptive element – it will affect wildlife and everybody here.
“They should find another site that is more suitable and less visible.”
